Yang Lu

Yang Lu’s “Uterusman,” a semi-open-source work featuring the eponymous genderless superhero warrior, takes the inspiration for its protagonist’s physique from the shape of a female uterus, itself resembling the outline of a person standing with feet planted and arms outstretched upwards. The artist creates work that explores themes of death, disease, genetics and biomechanics. Behind her daring approach to creativity, there’s a strong interest in otaku (the Japanese term for those with obsessive hobbies or interests) culture, manga and a deep fascination with the physiology of living creatures.
